Susan Turner, Director of Alabama Physicians for Life (APfL), recently discussed a host of important reproductive topics with ALCAP President Greg Davis on Priority Talk Radio. They began the conversation by covering different aspects of Susan’s work with APfL, including their website Alabama Pregnancy Solutions where “women in Alabama can find all 56 pregnancy centers in our state.”
They then move to the topic of infertility, which Susan Turner explains is “actually a symptom of an underlying disease, which we are learning more and more as we get into this understanding of infertility.” She says that there are organizations out there who are able and willing to assist couples in this area, such as NaProTECHNOLOGY.
When it comes to infertility, many people think that in-vitro fertilization (IVF) may be a good solution, but Turner argues that other options may be more desirable. IVF can be dangerous to a woman’s health, because the process involves making her hyper-ovulate to release more than one egg. She also says the whole process of IVF is emotionally “traumatic,” and this is before the ethical issues related to leftover embryos has even been brought up.
Greg Davis then mentions the statistic that 1-in-6 couples struggle with infertility, which means that reproductive issues affect the lives of countless people all around us. Turner explains that there are many different reasons for infertility, from scarring in the fallopian tubes to sexually transmitted diseases and more. She covers the intricacies of conception, and how it is more complex than a person may originally assume.
They then move back to discussing IVF bioethical issues, such as the production and treatment of embryos that are not used by women to carry to birth. What happens to them? In reality, the unused embryos are either frozen in storage indefinitely or destroyed. The Pro-Life position holds that the intentional destruction of life is morally wrong. In light of these important issues, Greg and Susan ask a related question, “Why is the IVF industry not regulated?”
The interview was incredible informative, with Greg Davis and Susan Turner finishing the conversation by covering natural and healthier alternatives to IVF for couples struggling with infertility. To hear the whole discussion, click here.
