ALCAP President and Priority Talk Radio Host Greg Davis recently visited with Alabama State Auditor Andrew Sorrell in his office in Montgomery for a sit-down interview. They started off discussing the important statewide election cycle that will occur in Alabama next year, and Sorrell’s future plans.
Current Secretary of State Wes Allen intends on running for Lieutenant Governor. This will open up his position, and Andrew Sorrell plans on running for Secretary of State. Greg Davis likened this political season to “dominoes” falling, as candidates line up for prospective positions.
Sorrell then pivoted to discussing a couple of the duties that come with being Secretary of State; one of the prominent responsibilities he would have––if elected––is ensuring elections are conducted safely and securely. This aspect of the job is important to him, and is one of the main reasons why he is running for the position. He discussed close races that have happened in the past in Alabama, and integrity issues that have surfaced. He also cited the fact that election integrity is an extremely popular issue with Alabama voters. Alabama citizens want their elections to be done properly and for the results to be sure.
Despite this information, State Auditor Sorrell shares, “We are the only state in the country that doesn’t audit our elections. All 49 other states have some type of election audit bill and we do not.” He would like for this to be changed, an opinion also held by many Alabama legislators.
