In a recent interview with ALCAP president Greg Davis, Carolyn Potter with the human trafficking recovery ministry, The WellHouse, discussed the work of the ministry and key signs of human trafficking to be aware of.
In light of recent horrific events in Bibb County, Potter pointed out the importance of being aware of the signs of human trafficking and reporting concerns to the appropriate authorities.
Parents also have a critical role to play to ensure that their children are protected and smartphones and the internet are a key element in this. While efforts have been made legislatively to help provide for more parental accountability and protection for children on the internet, Big Tech has often opposed these measures which then in turn has broader negative impacts in the prevention of human trafficking. Potter noted: “As a parent, I would say the number one thing you need to be looking out for is what’s happening in your own home on your child’s phone.”
The interview also highlighted the incredible work being done at The WellHouse to minister to the victims of human trafficking. The WellHouse is a comprehensive recovery program that supports survivors with trauma-informed care, medical services, therapy, and personalized treatment plans. They focus on helping women rebuild their lives through education, job training, and transitional housing, and each participant is paired with a volunteer mentor who offers ongoing support. All these factors combine to create real opportunities for healing and long-term independence.
Human trafficking is among the most devastating evils of our time. It was a privilege to bring more awareness regarding the issue and the work of dedicated ministries like The WellHouse who are making a big difference.
