Legislation Moving to Protect Alabama Children
The legislative session has just started, but several bills have been filed in the 2026 Alabama legislative session aimed at strengthening protections for children. These bills address both severe criminal acts against minors and risks posed by online platforms.
Child Predator Death Penalty Act (HB41 / SB17): These companion House and Senate bills would make the rape of a child under the age of 12 a capital offense. This legislation targets the most extreme offenders and spells out the seriousness of crimes against children, such as some of the horrific incidents that occurred in 2025.
Status: The House version has passed out of committee and now heads to the entire House body; the Senate version remains under committee consideration.
Social Media and App Age Verification Bills (HB171 / HB161): These bills focus on online safety for minors. HB171 would require age verification or parental consent for minors to access algorithm-driven social media feeds and would limit late-night notifications.
HB161 would require app stores to implement age verification and parental consent before minors can download apps.
Status: Both bills have been introduced and referred to House committees, where they currently await further action.
Raising Awareness about Sports Gambling Dangers for Young People
There has been a growing concern across the country regarding the dangers that online sports betting poses for the population, especially young people. A recent Pew Research study confirmed that over 30% percent of American adults aged 18-29 have gambled on sports in the past year. This reflects a marked increase over previous years. Alabama United States Senator Katie has recently called on the CDC to examine the damage of sports betting on youth, noting the lack of existing data on how much harm this is causing young people. ALCAP will remain committed against gambling and the addiction and destruction that it causes.
