Blount County Sheriff Mark Moon and Catching Predators

ALCAP President Greg Davis welcomed Blount County Sheriff Mark Moon onto Priority Talk Radio to discuss his recent sex sting operations targeting those who were preying on minors. Some of these have been done in conjunction with Chris Hansen (former host of the NBC show “To Catch a Predator”) and have also resulted in the arrest of people who are in the country illegally.

They started the conversation by talking about their shared Christian faith and a prayer event they both attended. Then they move to discussing Chris Hansen appearing on Fox, talking about Blount County, and mentioning Mark Moon.

Moon, who has now executed four stings with Chris Hansen, says, “The benefit [of working with Hansen] is… the opportunity to be proactive and to go after people without having to wait on them to come and hurt somebody.”

Sheriff Moon says that they have made 27 arrests in the five (total) stings that they’ve done. He hopes that their efforts will deter predators from attempting crimes in or around Blount County.

“These child predators are like heroine addicts. They understand the heroine that they purchase and are about to shoot in their arm has a 20% chance of having a lethal dose of fentanyl in it, but they are willing to take that chance to get that high. These child predators are in the same boat. They know that there is a 20% chance that who they are interacting with could be law enforcement––could be a sting––and they might get busted, but they are willing to take that chance.”
