ALCAP Prayer Rally Is a Success
ALCAP partnered with the Alabama Policy Institute and Eagle Forum of Alabama to hold our fourth annual Prayer Rally on February 12th. You can listen to the event here. We were blessed by all those who attended to pray for our political leaders and our great state. There was a good turnout, considering the change of locations from the State House steps to the RSA Plaza due to the rain. Afterwards, ALCAP hosted a lunch.
Let us continually be in prayer for our elected officials.
The “What Is a Woman” Act Is Now Law
Summary of Bill: The goal of this bill is to enshrine “male” and “female” into Alabama law. This legislation seeks to establish definitions for terms such as man, woman, boy, girl, father, mother, male, female, and sex within the context of state law.
Status: The bill quickly passed both the Senate and the House. Gov. Ivey has signed it into law.
HB231: Prayer and Pledge in Schools
In a from-the-Statehouse Priority Talk interview, ALCAP President Greg Davis sat down with State Rep. Reed Ingram to discuss his bill to have a statewide law vote on whether to require prayer and the pledge of allegiance in all Alabama classrooms each day. Listen to the conversation here.
Also, in an interview with Lisa Crane from WVTM 13 (NBC affiliate), Greg shared his thoughts on prayer and patriotism in Alabama schools.
Summary of Bill: This bill would propose an amendment to the Constitution of Alabama of 2022, relating to public K-12 schools, to require each local board of education to adopt a policy requiring that The Pledge of Allegiance be conducted to the United States flag and a prayer consistent with Judeo-Christian values be conducted at the commencement of each school day in each public K-12 school.
Status: The bill passed its House Committee and awaits a vote on the House floor.
SB78: Banning “Galaxy Gas”
Summary of Bill: This bill would prohibit the use of butyl nitrite or any mixtures containing butyl nitrite, commonly known as “whippets,” except under certain circumstances. This bill would prohibit the use of nitrous oxide, commonly known as “laughing gas,” and amyl nitrite, commonly known as “poppers” or “snappers,” except under certain circumstances. This bill would also provide penalties for any violations of the prohibition.
Status: The bill quickly passed its Senate Committee and then the Senate. Now it moves to the House.
HB179: Spiritual Care for Students
Summary of Bill: This bill would authorize each local board of education and the governing body of each public charter school to vote on whether to allow schools in their jurisdiction to accept a campus chaplain as a volunteer and, if the vote is in the affirmative, would allow volunteer chaplains to be made available to provide services at the request of a teacher.
Status: The bill awaits a vote in its House Committee.
HB178: The 10 Commandments in School
Summary of Bill: This bill would require each local board of education and the governing body of each public institution of higher education to display the Ten Commandments and a context statement in a common area of each school under its jurisdiction.
Status: The bill awaits a vote in its House Committee.
