The phrase “In God We Trust,” our country’s official motto, now holds a prominent place in the Alabama State House chambers, thanks to the efforts of Speaker of the House Nathaniel Ledbetter. The words are now displayed prominently above the dais, offering a visible reminder of faith and our heritage.

Speaking on Wednesday (Jan. 15th) with ALCAP President Greg Davis, Host of WXJC Radio’s Priority Talk, Ledbetter shared the inspiration behind the new addition. Reflecting on a past suggestion from State Rep. David Standridge and considering the tension in the country, Ledbetter said he felt called to act.
“It was just the right thing to do,” Ledbetter shared. “And I got to thinking, with everything that’s going on, with all the turmoil, if somebody looked up and was able to read that, maybe that would make them feel like they’re in a better place or make the decision that they feel led to be made.”
Now that the project is finished, Ledbetter hopes the motto will inspire lawmakers and guide future legislative sessions:
“We wanted to put it in a prominent place, and I couldn’t think of a better place to see it because most of the time, all the eyes are to the board to see how the vote comes,” he said. “We represent people in this great state, and I think it reflects all of our values.”
